Athermic cam film

Friends, I don't want to get regular film applied to my windshield. After researching, I came across athermic window film. In videos it looks transparent, but when I had it installed on the windshield, it looked like a foil film. Did the place I went to do it wrong, or are all athermic window films like this? I had to have it removed because I was afraid of getting a fine. What are your suggestions for blocking the sun on the windshield?
