Is the VW 1.4 TDI problematic?

Polo 1.4 TDI

I bought a 2015 Polo 1.4 TDI Comfortline at 102,000 km, drove it for 2.5 years, put 45,000 km on it, and sold it at 147,000 km. I took it on long trips and used it in the city too, kept up with maintenance without fail. It's not a top-speed car. But on long trips, as a family of 4, we comfortably cruised at a steady 150-160. Its insulation and comfort are very nice — it's the 6R chassis-coded facelifted Polo, which if I remember correctly is the chassis from 2015-2017. I was very happy with it, I only sold it to get a bigger car. Very happy — the engine never gave a single problem.

The only issue was during the clutch/flywheel replacement — it was the fault of the place I went to, because they fitted the 4-cylinder 1.2 TSI's flywheel onto my 3-cylinder car. I ran around for 1-2 months because of that, and finally had it checked at a dedicated VW service, and it turned out to be true — the mechanic's fault, not the car's. Other than that I was very happy with my car; fuel-wise, if you drive gently you get around 4.5-5 liters even in the city, and 4-4.2 L on long trips.

Before my current car, I drove the 2015 manual for about 4 years. I bought it at 78,000 km and sold it at 110,000 km. As far as I'm concerned it's excellent in terms of fuel consumption. My İzmir city average was between 3.5-4.5. Highway use at speeds above 120 varies between 4.8-5.2. The only thing that happened to me was the coolant pump failing, which cost me close to 20,000 lira 2 years ago. Other than that, I drove the car tuned for 1.5 years, because the stock manual ones come with 75 hp.

It really could stay slow when overtaking. With a Stage 1 soft tune it reaches 115 hp and 280 Nm of torque, which is plenty, in fact surprisingly fast. Other than that, the center screen with Bluetooth support was quite adequate. In terms of fuel consumption I'd definitely recommend it. There's the chronic issue people talk about with the turbo breaking, but even though I've been running it tuned, nothing has happened to me. If you have any other questions I can answer them.

@petrolawyer do you have any info about the stock 90 hp manual ones, I'm thinking of buying one too, but there are people saying they wouldn't deal with the hassle for that money because it's 3-cylinder, what kind of issues does the 3-cylinder have?
