Ford EcoBoost Engines: The Big Reward of Small Displacement

In the automotive world, manufacturers are in a race to develop lower-displacement but more powerful engines, both because of environmental regulations and consumer expectations. One of the winners of this race has undoubtedly been Ford's legendary EcoBoost family. In particular, the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine has become almost a symbol of the philosophy of producing big power from small displacement.

Systems like turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing were technologies that had been used separately for years. However, by bringing these three elements together with a unique engineering balance, Ford managed to achieve a surprising 125 horsepower from a displacement of just 999 cc. What's more, this power can be strongly felt not only at high revs but even in the everyday usage range of 1500-2000 rpm. The engine's 170 Nm of torque climbs up to 200 Nm with the overboost function, providing unexpected punch especially during in-city acceleration. In short, most drivers who use a car with this engine for the first time can't help but ask themselves, “how is this 1.0 going this well?”

With an average fuel consumption of 6 liters, EcoBoost engines also offer users an economical driving experience alongside their performance.

Although the timing system running on what's called a 'Wet Belt' setup is thought to bring chronic issues, contrary to the prejudices against three-cylinder engines, this engine continues to make a name for itself over many years and high mileages, provided that maintenance is done regularly and on time.
