Peugeot Hypersquare: Next-Generation Steering Set for 2027
Peugeot Hypersquare combines a rectangular steering wheel with steer-by-wire technology. Planned for production models from 2027, the system aims to improve driving precision and manoeuvrability through speed-adaptive steering responses.
Peugeot is preparing to reshape the interaction between driver and vehicle with its next-generation Hypersquare steering system. Replacing the traditional circular steering wheel with a rectangular design, Peugeot Hypersquare is being developed alongside electronic steer-by-wire technology. According to the brand’s announced roadmap, the system is scheduled to enter production vehicles from 2027.
What Is Peugeot Hypersquare?
Hypersquare is a steering control developed as part of Peugeot’s next-generation i-Cockpit approach. Its compact, rectangular design aims to improve visibility of both the instrument cluster and the road ahead. Peugeot plans to introduce the technology in future models, including the next-generation E-208.
How Does Steer-by-Wire Technology Work?
The steer-by-wire system paired with Hypersquare replaces the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels with electronic control. Driver inputs are transmitted electronically, while the steering ratio adjusts according to vehicle speed.
At low speeds, this setup is designed to reduce the steering movement required for manoeuvres. At higher speeds, it aims to provide precise and stable responses. Peugeot also states that the system filters unwanted vibrations while retaining the feedback drivers need to understand road conditions.
Reduced Steering Movement for Parking and Tight Turns
In the Peugeot POLYGON concept, Hypersquare rotates a maximum of 170 degrees in either direction from its central position. This eliminates the need for multiple steering wheel turns when parking or manoeuvring in confined spaces. The system is intended to make urban driving easier by reducing the hand movements required from the driver.
When Will Peugeot Hypersquare Be Available?
Peugeot is targeting 2027 for the introduction of Hypersquare and steer-by-wire technology in production vehicles. The next-generation E-208 is among the models expected to offer the system.
The brand also confirms that a conventional steering wheel will remain available on future models, including the next-generation E-208, providing an alternative for customers with different driving preferences.
