First car recommendation

Original Poster

Hello, I'm 22, I count as experienced but I don't have a car of my own; as a first car I'm thinking of a BMW E34 1991/1995. Would you recommend it? What could those who've driven one or have experience say?

Mate, for a first-car experience I'd recommend a Hyundai i20 or a Polo, but if you say you know people in the trade, finding a clean E39 would run just fine. Of course, running costs for BMWs are more expensive than a Hyundai or Polo, but for a first car it makes sense to start with a car that's cheap to run.

In terms of experience, since the E39 is rear-wheel drive, you need to develop a driving habit for it - the gas and brake timing in corners is completely different from front-wheel drive cars, and the center of gravity is different.

It's likely to give you headaches as a first car.. I'd recommend getting the lowest-mileage, newest car you can afford within your budget.. Then it makes more sense to think about getting a more fun car later.. I hope you find something to your liking ..

As a first car, an E34 or E39 will really burn your pocket. A friend of mine bought an E30 to fix up and drive, but had to sell it before finishing because things kept piling up on him - even if you have the money, you can run into time or parts shortages. Instead, a Polo 9N3 1.9 diesel, or if you want something more everyday the 1.4s, or a Grande Punto 1.4 T-Jet or 1.6 diesel, or a 1.4 140 or 150hp Bravo (Emotion or Sport style) - if you look at those, you'll be driving nice, good-looking cars for cheaper. Fiats have been handling 200hp pretty decently lately.

A solid E34 is really solid, even more so than an E39. But there aren't many good ones left, and it's also considered a relatively old-tech, outdated car by now.

My first car was a 1.3 Egea, it's been a month since I sold it, I drove it for a year. It can't really be said that I bought it willingly — my reason for buying it was so it wouldn't give me headaches and would use little fuel, so my second car could be the car I actually want, because even a parked car costs money :) I hope you understood.
