E36 - E46: is it worth building?

Original Poster

Hi friends, I'm quite interested in old cars and I'm on good terms with the workshop; I want to build a car myself. If I buy a BMW in the 300-400k range, roughly how much would I spend? Thanks. Do you have a different suggestion?

Hey buddy, hello, you need money and time. If you're going for a 6-cylinder or an M3, you need extra money. Forget everything else, you need a mechanic who'll actually understand it once you get the car, not one who just says 'buy it, we'll sort it out'. Believe me, you can't even imagine how much you'll have to struggle and how many headaches you'll go through for a CAN bus fault on an E46.

Hi, I was thinking of an M50, so it'd both sound enjoyable and be a pure driving machine. My reason for including the E46 is that the E36s are now much more worn out.

The purpose really matters. Since I wanted a daily driver, I put in a lot of effort and went with the M43 steel block. I can't say what everyone else's preference will be, but swap jobs aren't cheap either, especially with the 46, there's way too much electronics. Before getting into this project, if you have an auto-electrician who's up to the challenge and worth the money, go ahead; if not, you'll really regret it.
