The 318is comes with the M42 & M44 engine. 1.8 liter, 4-cylinder, 138hp-175Nm. The 320i comes with the M50 or M52. 2.0 liter, 6-cylinder. 150hp, 190Nm. 318is is 1240 kg. 320i is 1315 kg. First of all, there isn't much difference in their acceleration - one does it in 9.9s, the other in 9.7s. In terms of character, the 318 is a bit more eager to rev and spins up quickly. The 320i is a bit more docile by comparison. But if you're saying you want to experience the soul of BMW, you should get the 320i - that inline-6 sound alone is enough. Though naturally its fuel consumption is higher accordingly.

As for durability, the M50/M52 is definitely longer-lived. There are plenty of examples easily reaching 500k km. The points you need to watch out for: the VANOS solenoid and/or its gaskets can fail. The plastic timing chain guides can crack. Water pump and thermostat issues are common. If you keep up with regular maintenance, you won't have trouble with these. Most importantly, pick your oil like an expert - quality oil is a must.
