We interpret this appearance as a scratch. Light defects are described as holograms and swirl marks, while heavier defects are described as deep scratches. The buildup of these defects on the surface shows itself as the paint going dull and the feel of the surface being spoiled. Why Is My Car Getting Scratched? There are many factors behind paint getting scratched. The most important cause is not doing the pre-wash correctly. Washing You need to make proper contact when washing your car. This doesn't mean using the softest wash mitt. It means separating as much of the traffic film, mud, and coarse dirt from the surface as possible before making contact. We call this the pre-wash. Afterwards, it's washed with contact using shampoo and a wash mitt, rinsed, and then dried. Pre-wash Dirt removal done before washing. Whether foam or a regular mix, it's sprayed on while the surface is dry*. Doing a pre-wash with a pH-neutral chemical will not clean off heavy dirt or dirt that has been sitting for a while. This in turn means that the paint you're trying to protect in the next stage will get scratched. On a dirty car we should use a chemical that's pH-high, i.e. in the alkaline class. For cars in even worse condition, an acidic-then-alkaline washing method should be used first. If there's demand, I can go into more detail on this technique. Careless Contact Touching the paint by hand while it's dusty, constantly applying paste wax, constantly wiping with a cloth, and not using a good drying towel will cause scratches.
